Berlin and Finland. He graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the Berlin University of the Arts under Professor Robert Lucander and participated in the Hunter College “Studio Art” Master Program in New York. He has been awarded, among others, the Elsa-Neumann-Stipendium des Landes Berlin and the Finnish Art Society’s young artist grant. He worked as visiting lecturer in painting at Universität der Künste Berlin 2022-2026.Jäntti’s work spans painting, print, and glass sculpture to examine outsiderness, visual excess, and the intersections of high and popular culture through motifs of luxury and equestrianism. His first solo exhibition with Gallery Halmetoja in Helsinki will take place in August 2026, preceded by a two-part solo exhibition at Finlandsinstitutet and Grafiska Sällskapet in Stockholm in April 2026, alongside a three-year residency stipend at the Pro Artibus Foundation in Finland beginning in August 2026. Jäntti is currently university lecturer at Uniarts Helsinki. MARKUS JÄNTTI Once upon a time Miettinen Collection Berlin, 2026 The nature of time, of completion, and of commodification – which seeks to reduce the former, and strives towards the latter in order to more expeditiously arrive at one’s payday – are concerns common to both artistic production, and the horsey society depicted in Markus Jäntti’s works. Engaging with the visual lexicon of luxury brands, Jäntti considers their temporal dimensions by drawing on John Berger’s observation that advertising never speaks to the here and now. The artist’s appropriation of luxury labels’ visual codes and commercial idioms engages precisely this temporal slippage. Companies from car to clothing capitalise, via their communications, on the nostalgic yearning for a bygone belle epoque which perhaps only ever existed in these behemoth brands’ endemic visual presentations. This Bergerian “non-present” is a bucolic and beautiful realm, realised by Jäntti in oil, watercolour, and pencil. In Once Upon a Time it is traced on the earthy, absorbent surface of MDF. Despite this substance’s organic appearance it is, ironically, toxic if inhaled – if advertising has taught us nothing else, looks can be deceiving! The world of these paintings is visually beguiling in a way that invites continued, lotus-eating contemplation. There is, too, a faint whiff of sexuality beneath the hay and horse manure, reminiscent of that maxim of the advertising world which presents itself in products of all kinds: sex sells. This is the kind of spectation that art historian Harmon Siegel in his essay ‘“Avant- Garde” means racing past the finish line’ (2025) distinguishes as “looking” rather than “watching”. In a horse race, which one “watches”, the finish line is clear. In both producing and “looking” at art, the end point is more ambiguous. Jäntti delights in averting completion; his aquarel lines having been liberated from his brush, they continue to flow wetly across the surface. In an instrumentalisation of horror vacui central subjects are left as silhouettes, inviting extended daydreaming about their contents. Luminescent pigments that advance towards the eye are placed in the background, while the foreground is often in muted mattes – unsettling the eye and capturing it in slight disquiet. Jäntti thus both engages in the fantasy, and reminds us of the irreality of these pastoral visions. Without cynically mocking the emotional attachments that accompany consumption, the artist hints at how those attachments are manufactured, stylised, and sold back to us. Delicately (un)setting a mutable, fluid scene, Jäntti reminds the viewer of the discomfort of these inescapable bargains. Full of empty space and pigment that soaks in small, untameable fringes through their textured surfaces, his paintings’ temporality, figure, and perspective are as edge- blurred as the equine participants in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe or Kentucky Derby as they rush by. The concept is based on the origin story of Modest Mussorgsky’s 1874 piano work Pictures at an Exhibition, in which he reflected on a visit to a show of works by painter Viktor Hartmann. Jäntti and Sallinen, in turn, mirror this artistic experience by also combining visual art and music/sound. The artistic result of the project are ten individual videos that each combine a visual piece by Jäntti and a sound piece by Sallinen. The project also includes an audiovisual publication of Jäntti's visual works and Sallinen's compositions with texts commenting the process. The book was published by Argobooks in October 2022. A documentary video work that brought together the visual and sound works created as part of the project was premiered in October 2022 at Kulturhaus Schwartzsche Villa in Berlin."Sallinen discovers a drawing of a garden gnome on a cardboard display hidden in the basement boiler room. However, the gnome’s hat is not pointed as usual, rather shaped like a suction plug directed upwards, which in turn is somewhat reminiscent of Richard Wagner’s oversized beret. shortage: Lockdown and Suez canal blockage blamed. This news gave inspiration for the piece Gnommunion. In the video three garden gnomes called Atticus, Octavius and Caesar decide to abandon the yards they are guarding and escape. First they are baffled by the sudden freedom and amount of choices. In an amphitheatre they lastly decide to form a new communion just for gnomes and disappear from this world. The video was shot on an iPhone using three, scanned 3D models as animated AR objects. In my artistic praxis I’m interested in myths and beliefs being commercialized and turned into objects of mass production. Gnommunion reflects this phenomena in a middle class communion where the humanlike decorations have become very popular during lockdowns. The selection of this particular subject was influenced by the traveling gnome concept that Henry Sunderland started while he was travelling around Antarctica in the 1970s. With the creatures in the film, which he has sewn himself, he offers a satirical attitude towards humanity. The film depicts a family consisting of a unicorn, an eagle and a baby bird. “This group is a selection of different heraldic animals. The unicorn comes from the UK, the eagle from Germany. The baby bird represents the US, as the offspring of Europe”, says Markus Jäntti-Tuominen.The eagle which is married to the unicorn pays little attention to the wishes of the extravagant unicorn, which symbolises the trope of the artist with their desire for freedom. The eagle hardly understands the suffering of the unicorn and prefers to watch football.Markus Jäntti-Tuominen has fashioned the animals in a gender-neutral style: The unicorn, a little white-pink animal, is realised with a delicate male voice. The eagle, a rather imposing, muscular figure, has a deep female voice: “In my narration in the film, I also delve into being an artist. I decided to give the unicorn this clichéd feeling of frustration at beinga failed artist. The publication includes pictures, a foreword by Alvar Huhtanen, interviews with the artists and a text by Christine Nippe.The catalogue can be purchased directly from the artists. &nbsp; Foreword When visual artist Markus Jäntti was born in 1994, Art Center Salmela’s was fifth annual summer exhibition in Mäntyharju, Finland was ending. Robert Lucander was finishing his art studies in Berlin. Almost two decades later, in 2013, Jäntti began studying at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste) under Professor Lucander. Lucander and Jäntti have gone from teacher and student into colleagues, both as pedagogues (Jäntti has also taught at UdK since 2022) and as artists. Meanwhile, Art Center Salmela has grown into Finland’s largest visual arts festival. One of the highlights of the 35th annual exhibition is a joint show by Lucander and Jäntti, detailed on the pages of this book. I urge the visitor to see in Lucander and Jäntti’s works, displayed side by side, more than just a teacher’s influence on his student. This is visible, too – even as the present show was being installed, Jäntti noticed previously unseen ways in which Lucander’s visual language has impacted his own. But ultimately, on display are two artists as equals, both spurring the other toward new heights, both working together. Vigorous humor, a joyful sense of color, and the tension between high and low culture are central to their common art. The overall impression is pointedly aesthetic on one hand, and effervescently provocative, on the other. Moving through the exhibition, one would be forgiven the assumption that the two artists work together customarily – so natural, clever, and joyous is the interplay of the pieces. In fact, the works span two decades, and the artists have worked on them independently. There is an exception: three lithographs, made jointly for this exhibition by the two, taking turns on the same plates. Their repeating eye motif watches over the space from the back room, turning the artists’ gaze on the audience, but also on their shared history and past works. Perhaps the eyes belong to people populating the urban world, looking at the streets, shops, display windows and metro stations that constitute the natural surroundings of Lucander and Jäntti’s imagery. Thematically, the lithographs offer a point of entry into the themes and works of the exhibition, but they also drive it forward visually, toward a bright and crystalline form, making deft use of lithographic technique. This catalog is a record of the exhibition and an introduction to the amused, amusing, devout and disturbing art of Robert Lucander and Markus Jäntti. It is also an opportunity for Art Center Salmela to commemorate its 35 years of group shows, for which I thank the artists. In the course of these conversations, Markus came up with Modest Mussorgsky's piano work "Pictures at an Exhibition" from 1874, in which he had reflected on a visit to a show of works by the painter Viktor Hartmann. In the project "Et le passé revit le temps d'une visite", developed from 2017 to 2022, Jäntti-Tuominen and Sallinen mirror this artistic experience by also combining visual art and music/sound -- parallel to the genesis of Mussorgsky's work. Visitors and staff alike were fascinated and inspired by colourfu characters such as the Emoji Unicorn, the Fashio Knight and the Unicorn of the Future in the institute’s home on Berlin’s Friedrichstraße. These are the creations of the artist Markus Jäntti-Tuominen, the Finnis Institute’s youngest Visiting Artist to date. We invited the recent graduate of the Berlin University of the Art to present his imaginative work to a wider audience. Markus Jäntti-Tuominen is also the first guest artist to bring the medium of sculpture, combined with a video work, to the Institute's premises.The Finnish Institute’s Visiting Art/ist programme was launched in 2015. The idea of the programme is to offer artists the opportunity to present their work in a space that is frequented by multipliers of the art scene. It is primarily therefore the art itself that is visiting, although the respective artists do also regularly come to events such as openings and artist talks.&nbsp;Mainly artists from Finland living in Berlin have been selected for this programme. The aim has been to reflect the diversity of the local art scene in Berlin, with special emphasis on Finnish artists. At the same time, we want to avoid unnecessarily high transport costs and the associated carbon emissions. The Finnish Institute supports the project financially and organisationally and also takes care of PR. Ideally, the programme results in artists being invited to present another exhibition in German-speaking Europe or in selling their work. The Visiting Art/ists have been, in chronological order since 2015: Ville Kylätasku, Anna Retulainen, Anni Leppälä, Niina Lehtonen Braun and Markus Jäntti-Tuominen. Unlike in a gallery or a museum, the works presented in the context of the Visiting Art/ist programme are not hung on empty rooms with white walls. On the contrary, the works of art must — or may? — be spread out over the walls of an office and find their place amongst chairs, tables and shelves. As a visitor, you cannot avoid the works of art. At first&nbsp;unfamiliar, they become an integral part of everyday life over the course of the exhibition.
